Ocells marins: baldrigues, xatracs, currocs...

There are lots of birds which live at sea, and catch the fish they need to eat there. You can rarely see these kind of birds from the beach, but sometimes, they come near the coast and you can observe them with a telescope. However, the days of east wind, they tend to come near the coast, and it's easier to observe them with binoculars or without any equipment. For example, yesterday morning, when I was at the beach, I could see a bird of the size of a Herring Gull, with a thick, yellow beak and white underpants. This bird was a Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea).

The Cory's Shearwater is a bird of the family of the Procellariidae, who lives at sea and flies near the sea level. It's also the only present Shearwater in Catalonia at summer, so there was no doubt of the specie it was. Yesterday, I also can see others seabirds, like a Gull-billed Tern (Sterna nilotica), and a group of three the Sandwich Terns (Thalasseus sandvicensis). All these birds come near the beach because yesterday was a day of east wind. The sea was stirred, and took fishes near the beach with the waves.

On August 3rd, I went to "Les Deveses de Salt" to do bird ringing.
Bird ringing consists in putting a small light ring on the leg of the birds previously captured in special nets. It's also a small study of the specimen. The wing and the P3 (third primary) are mesured and the bird is weighted. In bird ringing, it's also important to know the age and the sex of the bird, how fat it is... All this information is used to track the behaviour of the species that live in a concret place: it studies the mortality and birth rate, and also each bird migration, among others.
The bird that are caught more times are the Eurasian Blackcap, the Common Blackbird and the European Robin.
The 3rd of August we captured these species, and also European Goldfinches, Sardinian Warblers, Blue and Great Tits, a Long-tailed Tit, an European Serin, Cetti's Warblers, Common Nightingales, European Greenfinches, a Melodious Warbler...
The most interesant birds were an Eurasian Scops Owl, wich was later re-captured, two adult Great Spotted Woodpeckers (a male and a female) and a Western Bonelli's Warbler.

Last weekend, I was in L'Escala and I went for a walk. When I was walking, I saw a shop window of wines and spirits. I noticed that in the labels of the wines there were a lot of bird pictures. The Wild Turkey appeared several times, but I could also see the Golden Eagle or the Mallard. There also was the Grouse and some gooses. The names of the bird were correctly placed, and matched with the pictures.
Here I leave the images of the bottles that I photographed:

Yesterday we went to the Banyoles lake, and there we saw a colorful duck, with orange "sails" and "wiskers". This duck is from Asia, and you can rarely find it in Catalonia. It also has got a breeding population in Germany, Denmark and Nederland.
This duck is certainly a Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata), a very rare species in Catalonia. This one is a male. It has long since in this lake, and has got a trust worthy behaviour, wich suggests that it may be coming from a particular house or a farmhouse where it was in captivity. In the lake, there are also other rare species, like the Egyptian Goose or the Muscovy Duck.
During the last years, there have seen different speciemens of Mandarin Duck in Catalonia, here are a few:
  • In Avià, Berguedà, a juvenile duck was seen  in 2012.
  • In Puig-reig, Berguedà, 6 speciemens were seen in 2012
  • In Ribera d'Ebre, a male was seen in 2013
  • In Pallars Jussà,  a group of 6 speciements was seen in 2013
  • In Garrotxa, a male was seen in 2013.
Aquí us deixo les meves fotografies de l'ànec.

Rapinyaires

Aquí us en deixo dues:

Some days ago, I wanted to see eagles, and finally at the 17th July, we went to the Pla de Martís, where I knew there were Short-Toed Eagles (Circaetus gallincus). This bird belongs to the family of the falconiformes. It's smaller than the golden eagle. The Short-Toed Eagle is easy to see at the Iberian Peninsula, specially at summer.

We toured all the zone, but we couldn't see the eagle. However, we could see a Red Kite (Milvus milvus). It flew over our heads and we could take good photos of it. We also could see another birds, like the Carrion Crow, the Common Buzzard, the Kestrel and the Raven. We already had photographed of them.

However, the best photo was certainly one of a Little Owl (Athene noctua). This owl lives in the zone, and it also has a nest on it. We already tried to took a photo of it, but it was at night and the photos were dark. Finally, we could took a great photo of the bird. It was possible because the Little Owl is also active during the day. We were able to go close the owl, and we could took great photos. There are two of them:

This Little Owl lives in an abandoned farmhouse, where it has got its nest. At night, it goes to the wheat field to hunt mouses, and then it takes them to its chicks.

Participo al projecte "Nius"!

Avui m'he animat a participar al projecte "Nius".

Today I have encouraged to take part in the project "Nius".
This project was launched by the Institut Català d'Ornitologia. Participating is very easy: if you know any nests near your house, you can collect the required data and send them to the web.
I knew an European Goldfinch nest that has an easy access and an hour later I collected all the data and I sent them. As you can see, it's very fast.

In case you decide to take part of this project, I pass you the link to the website: http://www.nius.cat/. You can also help doing a census of the common house martins of the area of your home and sending the information you collect in this other website, also launched by the ICO:  http://www.orenetes.cat/
It's a bit more complicated, because you have to do the census of a bigger zone, and sometimes you need some time to confirm that a nest is active, but you can try it.
