Next Saturday I'll go to a census of seabirds in the Bay of Roses, as a difficult point in identification of birds may be juvenile seagulls, I decided to draw them myself to learn it a bit better. This is a good way to memorize the different plumages. I drew two species: the Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) and the Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus) in their juvenile plumage during the first winter and first summer in the first species and the first and second winter in the second. At first, I made a drawing in pencil and then I colored it with watercolor appeal. I also post another drawing from last December, it's a Gull-billed Tern (Gelochelidon nilotica), where I used the same tecnique.
Here you have the result:
Les gavines (la que vola pertany a la gavina riallera)
The seagulls (the one wich is flying is a Black-headed Gull)
I take this post to recommend another guide, this time a seabirds one. It's called "Seabirds: and idetification guide", from Peter Harrison, it has got a foreword from Roger Tory Peterson. In it we find all the seabird species of the world, with detailed ilustrations wher you can see all the different plumages of each species.
