Començant la llista de l'any! -starting the year list!

El dia 1 de gener vaig fer una passada pels Aiguamolls, a veure si tenia sort i veia el corb marí pigmeu, però aquest no va aparèixer. Pel que em van dir, s'havia deixat veure durant les primeres hores de llum del matí al dormidor del Bruel, però llavors jo encara dormia. Sempre es pot intentar un altre dia. Tot i això, per haver sortit de casa amb la llista de l'any a 0 (o gairebé), la cosa va anar bastant bé. Cal dir que només entrar al parc vaig veure un rascló (Rallus aquaticus), espècie que tenia a la llista que vaig fer la passada entrada (la d'ocells que haig de veure sí o sí i aviat)!




També cal destacar un grup d'unes 20 grues (Grus grus) -que va passar volant i cantant per sobre nostre per la zona dels primers aguaits, deixant-se fer molt bones fotos-, un cabussó emplomallat (Podiceps cristatus), una arpella (Circus aeruginosus) i uns quants ànecs blancs (Tadorna tadorna).

En resum, la llista de l'any ja té 54 espècies, un bon començament, tot i l'omissió del meu objectiu principal, el pigmeu. El primer ocell de l'any va ser l'estornell vulgar (Sturnus vulgaris), per cert, i el primer que vaig fotografiar l'oca vulgar (Anser anser)!

 On the 1st I went to the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà nature park, to try to twitch a pygmy cormorant, but it did not appear. Another birder told me he had seen it during the early hours of the morning, but I was still sleeping then (dissapointed at myself). Well, I guess I can always try another day. However, when I left home my year list was at 0 (or almost), and things went pretty well. I need to say that just when I was entering the park I saw a Water rail (Rallus aquaticus), a species that I had wrote down on the list I made at the last post (the species I have to see this year or go home)!

The other highlights were a group of about 20 cranes (Grus grus) -which we saw flying over us and singing near to the first hides, allowing me to take quite great photos-, a Great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus), a Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) and a few Common Shelducks (Tadorna tadorna).


So kicking the yearlist off with 54 species, I think it's a good start despite not seeing my principal objective, the pygmy corm. Btw, the first bird I saw this year was the Common starling (Sturnus vulgaris), and the first one I photographed was the Greylag goose (Anser anser)!

Resum 2014! -2014 summary!

Acabant l'any observant mascarells i xatracs des del passeig de l'Escala, portats per la mala mar, he fet un resum de tot el que he pogut veure aquest 2014. He fet tres llistes. En les llistes de les millors espècies, he pensat que estaria bé deixar una mica (no gaire) de banda el meu instint natural de posar per davant les rares i contar els ocells que, realment, m'han fet disfrutar més veient-los, ja sigui pel seu plomatge increïble, el seu comportament o simplement per un alt nombre d'individus. Això mateix he fet en la llista dels ocells que no he pogut veure, tot i haver-ho intentat molt. En aquesta hi he afegit les fallades més "èpiques" de l'any. Allò de fer una hora de viatge i arribar a lloc i que et diguin que ja ha marxat... A l'altra llista, hi he posat les espècies que més vull veure el 2015, agrupades en dos grups: les que són tant vergonyosament comunes que si segueixo un altre any sense veure m'hauré de tornar a plantejar la manera com intento veure ocells, i les que són bastant o molt rares però tampoc impossibles.

Bon Any Nou i bones observacions per aquest 2015!!

Finishing the year with the shighting of two gannets and some terns in l'Escala, brought by the storm, I've made a summary of what I have been able to see this 2014. I've done three lists. To make the "greatest birds" list, I thought it would be cool to forget for a moment (just for a moment) my natural instinct of writing the rarest birds first, and count the species that made me enjoy a lot, either for their incredible plumage, behavior or simply a high number of individuals. I have done the same with the "most epic dips" list. In this one, I've included the birds that I couldn't see, even trying really hard. You know, dipping is one of the hardest things of the birding world... At the last list, I've wrote the species I really want to see next year, in two groups: the ones that are so shamefully common that if I spend another year without twitching I'll have to find another way of birding, and the ones that are quite or really rare, but still not impossible to see.

Espolla!

Una cogullada vulgar, molt fotogènica! A Crested Lark showing really well!

Al cap de mesos d'esperar aquest clima hivernal que no acabava d'arribar, les plujes i els vents de les últimes setmanes han arribat i han arrossegat també bastants ocells aquí al Pla de l'Estany.

Durant aquestes últimes setmanes no he tingut la oportunitat de veure cap raresa hivernal, però mentre reso i miro ornitho cada dia com una obsessionada perquè el corb marí pigmeu (Microcarbo pigmeus, primer per Catalunya i Espanya, realment impressionant!) que s'està veient els Aiguamolls no desaparegui per sempre abans de que trobi un dia per anar-lo a veure, he aconseguit trobar moments per voltar per la zona on visc a veure què s'hi veia. No he sortit d'aquella àrea d'uns 3km quadrats que en anglès anomenem patch, però he afegit algunes espècies a la meva patch list, just abans d'haver de fer el recompte de Cap d'Any i veure si he superat la meva anterior llista. Algunes probabilitats més d'èxit personal, suposo.

Dons bé, la meva bonica àrea inclou diferents zones de l'Estany de Banyoles i de la platja d'Espolla, un estanyol temporani que es va omplir i va quedar genial amb la llevantada de fa uns dies. El migdia que va deixar de ploure, just després de sortir de l'insti i sense ni passar per casa, ja era allà a veure com havia quedat l'estanyol. Tot tranquil, no hi havia ningú, i vaig veure una quantitat destacable d'ocells: esplugabous (Bubulcus ibis), un martinet (Egreta garzetta), ànecs collverds (Anas platyrhynchos) -sempre em queixo dels ànecs, perquè solen ser els únics ocells que veig, però, a dir la veritat, són genials-, un bernat pescaire (Ardea cinerea), diversos gaigs (Garrulus glandarius), cueretes blanques (Motacilla alba), dos esparvers (Accipiter nisus)...i a més, un conill de bosc i tres talpons (uns rosegadors que encara no havia aconseguit veure abans aquest any). L'endemà ja no va ser tant tranquil. A la mateixa hora, allò semblava la Rambla de Girona. Gent amunt i avall buscant "papus" (volien dir triops, -Triops cancriformes-, suposo, presents a la bassa) i fent fotos amb el mòbil havien espantat tot rastre d'ocells (a part dels sempre presents collverds, és clar).

Quan van haver passat el segon i el tercer dia des de la pluja, tot va tornar a la normalitat i, bàsicament, les espècies destacades han sigut el cotoliu (-Lullula arborea- una ventada n'ha portat nou avui davant de casa), l'àliga calçada (-Hieraaetus pennatus- si la veus volar a tres metres sobre teu impressiona!) i l'agró roig (Ardea purpurea).

After moths of waiting for some kinda cold weather that didn't seem to arrive, the winds and rains of the last weeks have arrived and also dragged some birds here in Banyoles, Catalonia.

During the last weeks I haven't had a chance to see any winter rarities, but while I pray and I check ornitho.cat (a catalan site like eBird) out every day as obsessed to make sure the Pygmy Cormorant (Microcarbo pigmeus, first record for Spain and Catalonia, truly a mega!) that is being seen at the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà nature park doesn't fly away forever before I finally find a day to go and twitch it, I managed to bird around my patch. I've ticked some species on my patch list just before New Year's, I guess it gives me more chances to get a higer number of species than last year!

Well, my beautiful patch includes the Banyoles Lake and Espolla, a temporary lake near my home, which, btw, has been filled and looks great. The same day it stopped raining, I managed to get to Espolla just before leaving from high-school, without even going home, to see how the pond looked. Everything was quiet, and I saw a remarkable number of birds: Cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis), a Heron (Ardea cinerea), Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) -I always complain about them, cause they are usually the only birds I see, but tbh, they are awesome-, a Little Egret (Egreta garzetta) several Eurasian jays (Garrulus glandarius), some White Wagtails (Motacilla alba ssp. alba), two Sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus)...and also an European rabbit and three Voles (a kind of rodents that I hadn't seen before this year). The next day it wasn't that quiet. There was a lot of people up and down looking for what they called "weird insects" (I guess they meant Triops -Triops cancriformes-, which can be found all around the pond) and taking photos with their phone had scared every single bird (apart of the always present Mallards).

After two days of complete caos, everything was normal again and I've seen a lot of birds. The highlights have been Woodlark (-Lullula arborea- the wind has brought seven of them just next to my house today) Booted eagle (-Hieraaetus pennatus- they look impressive when they fly three meters above you!) and Purple heron (Ardea purpurea).

Ahir va ser el Dia mundial dels ocells, com molts ja deveu saber, i, tot i que no vaig tenir temps d'anar als Aiguamolls tal com m'hauria agradat, vaig aconseguir algunes fotografies molt espectaculars, des de la finestra de casa! 

De bon matí, un estol d'estornells (Sturnus vulgaris) -que han arribat en massa fa poc- volava per sobre el camp de girasols que tinc a pocs metres de casa, fent increïbles figures al cel. Però l'autèntic espectacle va arribar quan dos aligots comús (Buteo buteo) van començar a intentar caçar-los al vol. Vaig anar de seguida a buscar la càmera, i les fotos són les que podeu veure a l'esquerra!

Els cables elèctrics no són gaire estètics, però no els vaig poder evitar a les fotos...

Maybe some of you already know it, but yesterday it was the World Birds Day. I didn't have time to go birding in a nature park as I wanted, but I took some really amazing photos from my house window!

When I got up, a huge flock of Common starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) -which have arrived some weeks ago- was flying over a sunflower field next to my house. There were about a hundred birds and that was incredible. Then, two Common buzzards (Buteo buteo) arrived, and the spectacle started. They were trying to catch the starlings while flying, and I ran for my camera. I took a ton of photos, but the ones you can see next to the text were some of the best!

The power lines aren't really pretty, but I couldn't avoid them in the pics...

Des de fa temps que pujo fotos a la pàgina web de la National Geographic Kids, i avui he sabut que una d'elles està publicada a la revista NGK d'aquest mes, així que crec que també la puc compartir aquí. Vaig fer la foto als Aiguamolls, es tracta d'un esplugabous (Bubulcus ibis). També aprofito per afegir algunes altres fotos que encara no havia pujat i amb les que he rebut altres reconeixements com  l'Editor's Pick o el Best of the month.

I've been posting photos to the National Geographic Kids website for a time, and I've just been announced that one of them has been published on the magazine of this month, so I think I could post it here too. I took this picture in the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà nature park, in Catalonia. The bird you can see is a Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis), a common bird for the zone. I had also been awarded with several other awards as the  the Editor's Pick or the Best of the month, so I'll also use this post to post some of them that I haven't posted yet.
