Lanius pallidirostris

En començar les vacances de Setmana Santa, i donat que en els darrers dies s'havia reportat la presència d'un Lanius m. pallidirostris (variant central asiàtica del botxí meridional, el Lanius meridionalis), hem aprofitat per fer una escapada cap al Baix Empordà.

Es tracta d'un ocell subjecte a força discussió científica, ja que es troba entre la categoria de subespècie i la d'espècie. Típic d'hàbitats oberts i més aviat secs, igual que el botxí meridional, prefereix àrees amb cables o arbustos elevats des d'on observar el terreny per caçar. L'individu de l'Empordà s'està en una zona amb plantacions de pomeres, molt adient per a aquesta espècie.

Només d'arribar hem pogut veure el botxí de lluny, però ha desaparegut de seguida i no l'hem pogut re-localitzar fins una bona estona després. L'ocell, molt confiat, havia caçat i estava alimentant-se en una branca alta. La projecció primària, el pit rosat i el blanc extens en les primàries es veien clarament, així com el bec lleugerament més gros que en el botxí meridional. Potser degut a la llum del dia, però, semblava més fosc, especialment del ventre, fet que m'ha fet dubtar amb la identificació, ja que el pallidirostris té un aspecte general pàl·lid. A més a més del botxí, hem vist limícoles i una gran quantitat de passeriformes a la zona, com el passarell (Linaria cannabina) o el gratapalles (Emberiza cirlus).

En conclusió, bons resultats del dia tot i el mal temps, ja que la pluja ha fet més difícil aconseguir fotos.



This month, a Steppe grey shrike (Lanius m. pallidirostris) was reported in the north of Catalonia, being a very rare sighting for the country. Thanks to the break from college this week, there was a twitch opportunity and I took it. This morning, we headed to the area where the bird has been being reported during this week.

The taxonomical situation of the Steppe grey shrike is complicated, being in some cases classified as a species and in some others as a subspecies of the Southern grey shrike (Lanius meridionalis). Both are characteristic of open dry habitats with high perches where to stay and look for their prey. Here in Catalonia, the individual that is being observed is staying in an area with different apple tree plantations, which are ideal of it.

We could catch a glimpse of the bird just when arriving, but it quickly disappeared and we couldn't see it again until much later. The bird was really reliant on people and even if a car or a bike passed by, didn't seem to be too bothered while feeding on a high branch. The large primary projection and the amount of white on its primary feathers, as well as the rose-coloured patch on its chest and relatively larger beak than the Southern grey shrike were clear. Still, perhaps due to the weather and light, the bird seemed darker than it should, making me hesitate on whether I was getting the identification right. Apart from the shrike, we saw a few waders and a bunch of passeriformes around the area, such as the Common linnet (Linaria cannabina) or the Cirl bunting (Emberiza cirlus).

All in all, such a great and successful day out in the field, despite of the bad weather conditions (which definitely made photography harder though).
